Elene Bodner, 53, of 424 West Easy Street, has been booked on 36 counts of animal cruelty.

When an anonymous call came in Monday about 10:30 a.m. complaining about an awful odor coming from Bodner's home, deputies went to investigate.

When they got to Bodner's home, they found three dogs chained underneath the dilapidated porch that led to the front door.

Inside the mobile home they found dozens of cats, dogs running around the home. The animals had a range of skin problems, upper respiratory illnesses and eye inflammations.

One cat's eyes were so inflamed, the cat was blind. Three bird cages had two to three inches of excrement, bird seed and dirty water at the bottom of the cage.

There were thousands of roaches inside the trailer. Trash and animal waste covered the carpeted floor of the mobile home. Cat and dog food was hanging from blades of a ceiling fan to keep the food away from the roaches. The home did not have any electricity and the authorities were not sure how long the animals had been living there.

Bodner said she went to the trailer daily to feed and water the animals, but she had been staying in a motel for the past few days.

As Bodner helped animal rescue load her animals into vehicles, she would cry once in a while.

She said, "I fed them. I've been trying to get rid of them. But there's only so much I can do. It as just too many."

The property owner where Bodner kept her animals, said he had been trying for years to get her to do something about the smell. "I even bought lye to take care of the smell. 'Ive given her chance after chance. It really went from bad to worst."

Bodner is now being held in the St Charles Corrections Center in lieu of $36,00 bond.
