Rudolph Babcock, 49, was found guilty by a jury of failing to provide sufficient food and water for some of the animals in his care. Ninety-five dogs were taken from his home last year.

Babcock was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to pay $5,000 to the Geauga County Humane Society. Judge Craig Albert suspended a 90 day jail term and $750 fine for the misdemeanor charge but ordered Babcock to pay $1,000 in court fees.

The humane society president, Jean Antonacci, said it has cost about $40,000 about half of which was raised by the community to care for the dogs since they were taken in Oct.

Judge Albert said he would return 70 of the dogs to Babcock under the conditions Babcock pay a court-appointed veterinarian to monitor the dogs every two week for the next five years. Judge Albert said, "The first time you get a 'D' or an 'F' you're in trouble."

A charge of failing to provide sufficient shelter for a six-week old puppy was dismissed before jury deliberations began and a third misdemeanor charge was dismissed.
