Jeanine Blue was found guilty by a jury earlier this month of allowing her 74 pet sheep to run at large. She has been ordered to auction off her pet sheep and proceeds from the sale will go to Jeanine Blue.

Missaukee County animal rights activists are trying to help Blue keep her sheep. Blue allowed the sheep to run at large, eating her neighbor's crops and generally making a nuisance of themselves.

Dean Robb, a Traverse City lawyer contacted by the activists said, "Something needs to be done. We're not talking about mutton here. We're talking about pets."

Neighbors said they feel sorry for the animals whenever she drives by them. "They haven't been sheared so they are very heavy, so heavy they can hardly walk. My in-laws have given hay to help out. The sheep get out and eat farmers' wheat."

No one doubts Blue's love for her animals. "She keeps them in the house when they get sick."

Blue was previously convicted in 1985 and 1989 for letting her animals run at large. She lives alone on a small, tumbledown farm. She does not have a telephone.

The prosecutor said the sentence won't be carried out for a couple weeks to give time for a possible appeal.

"There is more to this case than just letting animals run at large. They broke out because they were not getting enough to eat. The animals are not in good shape."
