The RSPCA says it will continue to crack down on cases of animal cruelty at South Australian rodeos. In the Clare Magistrates Court on April 11, 2006, Marrabel Rodeo organiser Andrew Patrick Allchurch was convicted of twice breaching the rodeo code of practice and was fined $800. It is said to be the first conviction of its kind in South Australia.

The RSPCA's Emily Vatkovic says even though the organisation is opposed to rodeos altogether, it is pleased with the result. "The RSPCA is satisfied that the courts are taking this seriously by imposing not only a fine but also a conviction," she said. "This does set a precedent for any further rodeos that are taking place that if there are any breaches to the standards that there is the possibility they could be fined or convicted.
