Joseph Argenziano, 67, was arrested when the authorities found dead, starving and injured animals on his foul smelling property on Station Avenue in the island's Pleasant Plains section. There was not any food or water available for the animals.

There were three rabbits and two ducks that had died in pools of stagnant water and piles of animal filth.

The ASPCA took four sick rabbits, two ducks with broken wings and three ailing ferrets to it Bergh Animal Hospital in Manhattan for treatment.

The remaining animals will stay under supervision on the property until they an be safely transferred to another location.

The police had to be called to the property after Argenziano argued with the ASPCA investigators when they told him he was charged with animal cruelty and with violations of city health code for having farm animals on his property.

It appeared he was trying to set up some kind of a petting zoo. He did have a state farm permit to have farm animals which is not good in New York City.

About half a dozen animals were found dead and there wasn't any food on the property.

Officials had gbeen aware of the problem since last week when a horse died at Bunny-rama, the name of the petting zoo. The petting zoo had not yet opened for business.
