Denise Bortolotto, 46, of Sudbury has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with failing to provide suitable and adequate care, abandoning an animal in distress, and causing unnecessary suffering to her dog.
On November 11, 2005, the City of Greater Sudbury Animal Control agency contacted the Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch regarding a dog that had been brought to their pound. The dog, a nine-year-old, black, male Labrador retriever, had been found in a bush area near Morgan Road in Chelmsford. Examination by a veterinarian found the dog to be suffering from an ulcerated mass filled with fluid, which would have led to the dog's death had he not been found.
The animal control officers made pleas to the public for information regarding the ownership of the dog, which led to the dog and its owner being identified. The case was then transferred to Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch investigators.
Denise Bortolotto is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sudbury on April 26.
