Dog beaten with bolt cutters
Billings, MT (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Dec 2, 2005
County: Yellowstone

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Lawrence Douglas Vogel

A Billings man accused of beating a dog with bolt cutters has been charged with a felony crime of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Lawrence Douglas Vogel, 27, was arraigned March 23 in District Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge. He is free on a $7,500 bond pending trial.

According to court records, a Billings police officer was sent to check on a report of cruelty to an animal at the Moore Lane Veterinary Clinic on Dec. 2. A man had brought a Labrador retriever named Chubby to the clinic after the dog was beaten at a residence on North 24th Street.

The man told the officer he was with several others when they went to visit Vogel. He said the dog began barking when they rang the doorbell, and Vogel chased the dog into the garage. Prosecutors allege Vogel severely beat the dog with a pair of bolt cutters, causing the dog to bleed profusely and knocking out several teeth. The dog's left mandible was also detached during the incident, court records state.
