Oak Ridge police Friday charged a Scarboro neighborhood man with criminal charges stemming from a Feb. 11 incident involving pit bull terriers. Willie T. Booker, 52, of 274 S. Benedict Ave., was charged with three counts of cruelty to animals.

Booker was arrested on warrants after an investigation into the abuse of several pit bull terriers that police and animal control officers found on his property.

A least two dogs had to be euthanized after they were taken to the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter. Others taken there are being treated for injuries police believe were caused by dog fighting.

Booker was charged Feb. 11, 2003with 16 citations for violation of the city animal registration law, eight citations for improper restraint and two citations for the improper care of an animal.

Police Chief David H. Beams said earlier the dogs had bite marks all over their bodies, and had both healed and open wounds. He said some had legs that were ripped open, gaping wounds and their ears ripped off.
