A family was robbed and their dog shot during a holdup on the evening of March 31 in front of their home. Police responded to three calls of shots heard in the 6600 block of Pierce Court about 8:19 p.m., Chino police Sgt. Mark Foster said.

When they arrived, the victims reported they were robbed after they pulled up to their home, he said.

The family was approached by two males, one of whom was armed, as they exited their car, Foster said. The suspects demanded money, and during the robbery one of the men shot the family's 7-month-old female pit bull, Foster said.

It was hit in the hind end,'' he said. It was a through-and-through shot.''

The robbers may have been startled by the barking dog as it approached them, he said.

Both men then fled the area in a white mini van which was parked on a nearby street. They were last seen driving south on San Antonio, Foster said.

The dog was treated by a local vet and is expected to survive, he said.

A picture is worth a thousand words,'' Foster said. She had this real pitiful look on her face.''
