Fredia Adams, 50, East Lake was charged with animal cruelty and neglect on Thursday after more than 100 cats and 10 dogs were taken from her filthy home. All the animals had to be destroyed.

Neighbors became concerned about a month ago because of the numerous dogs in the backyard and cats lying in the windows of Fredia Adams' brick house at 7764 First Avenue, South.

When police and a representative of the Humane Society went to he home several weeks ago, she would not let them inside her home. The authorities had to go to Birmingham Municipal Court to obtain a warrant to seize the animals.

The ten mixed breed dogs were removed from the backyard and euthanized.

All the cats taken from the home had to be destroyed because they had upper respiratory infections and other diseases. Some were given a lethal injection at the house.

There was an overpowering odor of feces and urine in the house. There didn't appear to be any adequate food, water or litter boxes.

Fredia Adams had abandoned the house to her cats and moved into a garage apartment in the backyard. The authorities will try to seek help for her.
