Susan Appleby, 57, is charged with felony animal cruelty for keeping about 60 cats in her small bungalow, all were kept in "horrible conditions." Animal control removed 58 cats and one cat carcass from her home on Oct 23.

The photographs taken inside her home on the 1000 block of Dawson Avenue led to the relatively rare charge of felony animal cruelty.

"Not only was (Appleby's house) unfit for humans to live inside, it was unfit for animals."

All the cats needed medical attention and some of the cats had to be euthanized.

"This is not a problem where she will be sent to state prison. Instead, he said, felony probation with close supervision would be more appropriate."

Appleby in Oct 1998, had 118 cats and cat carcasses removed from her mobile home in Carson. The cats were in such bad state from disease an malnutrition that only five or six could be saved.

Appleby said, "I like animals, and I was just trying to find them homes. I never meant to create the chaos that I did."

The seized cats are getting medical attention. The surviving cats will be placed for adoption as soon as they are healthy.
