Harold Adkins, 71, and Delores Adkins, 68, were arrested on animal cruelty charges by the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals.
The incident started on Sunday morning when a neighbor reported seeing smoke billowing from the Adkins' home.
Cops were admitted after they threatened to break down the door. The firefighters were denied access to the house by the couple.
The smoke was caused by a malfunctioning oil burner.
It was then, 140 Pomeranians were found in cages "stacked like a hardware store." The Long Island man's explanation for so many dogs was, "My wife just loves puppies."
Animal control officers responded to rescue the dogs from what an official called "horrendous" conditions in the Adkins' East Patchogue home.
Steel cages were stacked in the basement, second floor bedroom and backyard shed of their Camille Lane home.
The dogs are to beheld at a shelter pending the outcome of the case.
"Having that many animals in a private residence and stacked like shelves in a hardware store in dirty, filthy, deplorable conditions with no exercise and sunlight and being force-bred is extremely inhumane."
When he dogs were examined by veterinarians, all but two were found to be healthy. One had cataracts and another a bad scratch.
The Pomeranians ranged in age from puppies to adults and included three pregnant females. The ceilings in the home had been soundproofed and the dogs had been given fertility drugs and vitamins to enhance their breeding ability.
