Otto Leroy Allen, 51, and Sandra Allen, 53, of 89 Sigel, Battle Creek, MI, have both been charged with animal cruelty. Otto Allen pleaded guilty to 45 counts of animal cruelty. He has been sentenced to 93 days in the county jail, the maximum allowed.

The Battle Creek police said they found about 50 dogs, cats, rabbits and birds living in filth at the two homes Allen owned with his wife, Sandra Wyman-Allen on Sigel Avenue and Ashland Street.

On Wednesday, Allen was back before Calhoun County District Judge Frank Line after pleading no contest to violations of the Battle Creek City Housing Code and guilty to one count of cruelty to animals, also filed under the city ordinance.

Both charges carry a maximum of 90 days in jail. Line sentenced Allen to 36 days in the county jail and imposed fines and fees of $549 for the code violations and 36 days in jail and fines and fees of $689 on the animal cruelty charge.

Allen has also been ordered not to possess any animals during a 24-month probation and ordered him to pay restitution to the Humane Society Calhoun Area for the care of three dogs and three rabbits seized in one of the houses.

The society said it had spent as much as $5,000 on veterinary care and housing for the 72 animals taken from the couples properties.

Allen said he sold the property on Ashland Street and a bank has foreclosed on the property on Sigel Avenue.

The couple has been called "animal collectors" who believe they are well-intentioned but are oblivious to the suffering of the animals.

Sandra Wyman-Allen pleaded no contest to 45 counts of animal cruelty. She will serve 30 days in jail, be placed on two years probation, forfeit the two houses and all animals, work 200 hours of community service and pay nearly $13,000 to house and care for the animals to the Humane Society-Calhoun area.
