weak sentence = one star

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Puppy mill - 76 poodles seized
Aurora, CO (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jan 23, 1991
County: Arapahoe

Disposition: Convicted

Defendants/Suspects:
» Maria Baker
» Rosaline Pierce

On March 27 Maria Baker pleaded guilty to animal neglect and was fined $250. Maria Baker also pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to a zoning violating and to having too many dogs in her home.

Prosecutors dismissed 43 other charges against Baker in February after animal control officers removed 76 poodles from her home and an Aurora dog grooming shop owned by her daughter Rosaline Pierce.

When the authorities seized the dogs, many of the poodles were soaked with urine and feces.

Pierce faces about 300 counts, from animal neglect to zoning violations. Pierce's next court hearing is April 24. Pierce was charged with animal neglect and selling puppies from her home.

Animal control officers said Pierce was running a "puppy mill" from her home. The dogs were reportedly soaked with urine and covered with feces when they were taken to the animal shelter.

Both women were charged with contempt of court this month after they picked up more than 60 dogs from the Aurora animal shelter and took them to the grooming shop. They had been ordered by a judge to board them with a veterinarian.

Baker also pleaded guilty to the contempt charge. Judge Gregory Hopkins said she'll have to pay part of the shelter's cost for boarding the poodles.
