County: Roanoke City

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jeff Bradley

Hernandez Glover: "I was screaming and crying. You know, my first instinct was to pick him up.. He's like my child. And I just froze, I couldn't believe it." Hernandez Glover says it's just awful what happened to her dog Canaan on March 28, 2006. Her seven month old pit bull ran out of her house and into the yard next door. That's when neighbors say, the man living there shot and killed Canaan. Glover: "We heard two gun shots. And I ran over to him and by the time I got into his yard... he was dead."

Neighbor Phillip Campbell says he watched as Jeff Bradley pulled the trigger. Campbell: "I see my neighbor Mr. Bradley on my left side, coming out of his basement door with a shotgun and I look and he raises the shotgun and he fires and shoots the puppy that lives on my right side... A seven month old puppy isn't going to hurt anyone." But Bradley says he shot Canaan in self-defense. Bradley: "The dog put himself in a position where he was in between me and access to the house, so I had no way to retreat. The dog at that time moved towards me aggressively. He was growling and barking and seemed to be intent on... In his mind protecting his turf."
Reporter: "Does it make you feel uncomfortable that your neighbors and your neighbors kids think of you as a dog killer?" Jeff: "I wish they didn't. But the thing that needs to happen so these things won't occur is for them to fulfill their duty to contain their dogs."

Bradley is facing charges for reckless handling of a firearm and shooting it in the city. But those charges could be upgraded since shooting a pet dog is a felony in Virginia.
