65 sick cats seized from farm
East Gwillimbury, ON (CA)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Dec 9, 1997

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: man

An unidentified man had 65 sick cats removed from a farm he rented in East Gwillimbury. The Ontario Humane Society has been rounding up the cats at his farm since Dec 9.

The farm is located near Davis Drive and Woodbine Avenue. He lived on this farm for several years with his cats. Social service agencies have persuaded him to move into a hostel.

The man would spend days foraging for scraps of food from fast outlets to feed the cats. "They (the cats) were confined to the barn. He would go to fast food places. They lived on a diet of Kentucky Fried Chicken and Swiss Chalet."

Most of the cats were kept in the barn but a few of them lived in the house with the man. "He likes cats. He surrounded himself with cats, but far, far too many. He obviously had a soft spot for cats."

"For some people it's like this, it's therapy for them. They just get in over their heads."

After the cats were seized from his farm, he has been calling or dropping in to find out how the cats are doing. He is being discouraged from visiting because so many of the animals will have to be put down.

One cat has been adopted by a family. The society has put down about a dozen cats. Two kittens have died of natural causes. The humane society thinks many more will be euthanized because they are suffering from a variety of ailments, from parasites to the flu. Most of the cats were never vaccinated, and had been in-bred.

The society is looking for organizations that will take hard to place animals. The adoption fee will be waived.
