Authorities charged a Palatine man with animal cruelty for allegedly hitting a Canada goose in the head with a broomstick and then decapitating it in late March.

Ruben Amezcua Silva, 37, of the 1800 block of North Green Lane, was charged March 30, police said. The misdemeanor carries a punishment of up to a $2,500 fine and 1 year in prison, a Palatine police statement said. The suspect was released on $1,000 bond, police said.

Witnesses saw Silva attack the goose with a broomstick and then cut off its head with a kitchen knife, police said. Authorities found the goose's nest and eggs and turned them over to the Illinois Department of Conservation.


Case Updates

Witnesses reported Ruben Amezcua Silva, 37, of 1877 N. Green Lane, first hit the wild goose with a broom handle before cutting the animal.

Police were called to the 1800 block of North Green Lane and found a nest with eggs near the scene, which witnesses said belonged to the goose.

Officials from the Department of Conservation were contacted to care for the eggs.

Cruelty to animals is a class A misdemeanor and carries a fine of up to $2,500 and or one year in jail. Silva's court date is May 5.
