A March 25 afternoon raid on a Banks County property resulted in the arrest of 36 people on felony animal cruelty and gambling charges.
Banks County sheriff Charles Chapman said that a combined law enforcement effort made the raid a success and the arrests occurred without incident at a property on Marion Cape Drive, located just outside the Homer city limits.
"Originally, we received information that the chicken fight was to be held in another county, Chapman said. Then we got some follow-up information that it would be at a residence in Banks County."
Officials from the Banks County Sheriffs Office, the Northeast Georgia Narcotics Task Force and several other state agencies were involved in making the arrests.
The chicken fight/gambling operation was being held at property owned by Dennis Eugune Gosnell, 47, of Homer. Gosnell was also arrested and charged with felony cruelty to animals and commercial gambling.
Once law enforcement officials learned that the chicken fight was under way with several people already present, a team was quickly assembled early afternoon on March 25.
Several officers approached the property from a wooded area behind the house while others approached from the front. Chapman said several roosters were dead as a result of the fighting that was being held.
Henry Gary Scott, 35, of Homer, was also charged with possession of a firearm, in addition to the animal cruelty and gambling charges. Charles Edmond Rogers, 65, of Cleveland faced an additional charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Chapman said approximately half a pound of marijuana was seized along with other drug paraphernalia.
All those arrested had bonded out of the Banks County jail by Sunday.
"The operation went well," Chapman said. "It took several hours to complete the operation and get everyone booked."
Chapman said during his years as both a deputy and as sheriff, this was the first operation of this kind in Banks County. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
