The carcass of a dog bound with a rope was discovered March 25, 2006 in an area of eastern Washtenaw County where nearly 40 pets and wild animals -- most of them decapitated -- have been found dead in recent weeks, authorities said. The Rottweiler found five miles east of downtown Ann Arbor in Superior Township may have been there for several weeks, said Tanya Hilgendorf, executive director of the Humane Society of Huron Valley.

The dog was not decapitated like other dead animals found in the vicinity, but its death appeared to fit the same pattern of cruelty, Hilgendorf told The Ann Arbor News. The carcasses of two dogs and two foxes were found March 24, 2006 in eastern Superior Township. The dogs had been decapitated and the foxes had been skinned, the Detroit Free Press reported. Another seven bodies were found March 23, 2006. Authorities said 39 animals have been brutally killed in the area since January 2006. That total includes five dogs and wild animals such as coyotes, foxes and deer. A cruelty investigator is working full-time on the case, Hilgendorf said. "We're very concerned, and we're taking it very seriously," she said. "We would like to caution people especially to keep close watch on their animals, dogs and cats, and not let them out unsupervised. Keep them fenced in the yard."

The Humane Society is offering a $6,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The organization has received more than 100 calls with carcass sightings and tips. "We're getting lots of good information and are still putting things together, but our investigator spends half the day picking up dead bodies," Hilgendorf said.
