Incident Date: Tuesday, Feb 28, 2006

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Three cats were found left for dead in sealed plastic bags in Ware. An angler found the three domestic short-haired animals next to the River Lee on March 19, 2006. The man took the cats to the Wood Green Animal Shelter in Godmanchester, Cambs, where they are now being cared for. "It's awful, they went through a terrible ordeal," said a spokesman for the shelter.

The cats, dubbed Tutti-Frutti, Jelly Tot and Skittles by staff at Wood Green, are now recovering at the centre. "They are pretty healthy, but they were in a state when they were first brought to us, they needed to have a bath," she said. "They were still a bit traumatised when they were first brought here, but now they are okay and are about ready to be re-homed." Two of the cats are two years old, the other is nine months. All three were friendly and appeared to have been pets and the youngest had been spayed, said the spokesman.

A Hertfordshire RSPCA spokesman said: "These cats were dumped and obviously left to die; they would have suffered a great deal." If caught, the culprits could face a £5000 fine or a six-month prison sentence. To report an instance of animal cruelty call the RSPCA's 24-hour hotline on 0870 555599.
