Case UpdatesThe boys reportedly found the dogs in an isolated area near 56th Street North and Mingo Road, Lee said. Animal Aid workers are calling the surviving puppy, whom Lee described as a Shepherd and collie mix, Hope. Lee said the boys first called KJRH, channel 2, about the dogs on Monday and that employees there told them to call Animal Aid because one of the puppies was still alive and the group operates a 24-hour rescue service. The puppy is now being treated at the Carbondale Veterinary Clinic.
"It appears that she was shot through the back of her neck at the base of the skull and it exited out through her throat," Lee said. "She is paralyzed on one side at this time, and we don't know whether that will be permanent." The puppy's jaw is fractured, and one eardrum might be ruptured. Lee said many people have asked to adopt the puppy, but she hasn't been stabilized and is not ready for adoption. One of the nighttime employees at the Animal Emergency Center told Lee that the boys showed her a picture of the mother dog. Around her neck was a rope with which she apparently had been strangled. The boys also told Lee that as many as 10 puppies might have been shot. Lee said she has tried unsuccessfully to contact the boys. She plans to call a police officer who has worked with her on previous animal-abuse cases. "We do believe that there was a litter of puppies that was destroyed and another dog who was hung in this terrible way," Lee said. "And now there is a puppy who is hospitalized. We just want this to stop."
Anyone with information about who injured the puppy or killed the other dogs is asked to call Animal Aid at 744-8280. | Source: Tulsa World - March 24, 2006 Update posted on Mar 29, 2006 - 5:14PM |
