Dog thrown from moving vehicle Elyria, OH (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Mar 19, 2006 County: Lorain
Disposition: Open
Person of Interest: Adult
A man driving a white van on Murray Ridge Road was seen throwing a dog out a window early yesterday morning while traveling at about 40 mph, according to a police report.
A motorist witnessed the incident and reported it to police at 12:50 a.m. on March 19, 2006.
Police came to the scene on Murray Ridge Road and found the dog limping in the roadway, according to the report. Police said the man who witnessed the incident stayed near the animal until officers arrived. The male dog, a golden retriever mix, did not appear to be seriously injured, the report stated. Police took him back to the station last night, according to Lt. Andy Eichenlaub. No one has been arrested as of last night, according to police.
The dog, who was not given a name, was kept at the Elyria police station and taken to the Lorain County dog kennel, 301 Hadaway Street, yesterday morning, Eichenlaub said. ''Apparently, the dog, was not hurt that bad,'' he said. A man called Elyria police and told them he saw a dark-skinned man throw the dog from a late model ''white panel van'' on Murray Ridge Road near Leo Bullocks Parkway, according to the report. The witness told police the dog hit the roadway and slid in front of his vehicle, the report stated. He was able to stop in time to avoid hitting the dog, according to the report. Jack Szlempa, Lorain County dog warden, said his deputy warden who was on call was not contacted for this incident. He said the dog wardens do not typically respond to humane cases but are called for stray dogs. ''We have no knowledge of the call,'' Szlempa said. ''This is news to me.''
Szlempa said he hopes whoever threw the dog from his vehicle is found and prosecuted. If you have information on this case, please contact: Loraine County Animal Control (440) 322-4321
