A man and his wife, Edward and Volar Ross of Judsonia, are currently being held in White County Detention Center on three counts each of animal cruelty. Bond is set at $1,500 each, said a White County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson.
On Friday, March 17, 2006, White County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 107 Foster Circle, Judsonia, for a structure fire, and while attempting to locate the source of the fire, they found three dogs, approximately two to three years old, tied out behind old junk cars. The dogs had no food or water, and it appeared that they had not eaten in several weeks, according to Deputy Kyle Toler’s report. The male labs have spent their entire lives on chains and had no shelter other than underneath the old vehicles they were permanently tethered to. The chains around their necks had to be cut to release them, and the dogs appeared to be starving, said Jaxie Heppner of the Beebe Humane Society, who was called to take the dogs.
The dogs were taken to the Beebe Humane Society, where Heppner reports that they are eating and in very good spirits. There is no room to keep them there, but Heppner has arranged for an animal rescue group from New York to take the dogs. Heppner said the group had done a lot of work with animals from Hurricane Katrina, and she feels lucky the dogs were rescued and are going to such a good group. References
