Animal control officers in Prince George's County have seized dozens of roosters as part of an investigation into cockfighting. Authorities say they were called to a home Friday afternoon near Ritchie Marlboro and Sansbury roads in Upper Marlboro, where they found as many as 50 roosters tethered to various objects in the yard.

Rodney Taylor, with Prince George's County animal control, said authorities found a cockfighting pit, as well as various paraphernalia. Authorities say no one has been arrested.

Cockfighting, which is illegal in most states, pits two roosters sporting steel blades on their legs. During a typical tournament, one-third to one-half of the birds die; many endure broken wings, punctured lungs and gouged eyes.
