In 2003, Bouvry Exports of Calgary, Alberta, an alternative meat specialist of bison, horse, beef and ostrich, pleaded guilty to five counts of animal cruelty stemming from negligent conditions. The company paid a $12,000 fine to the state Department of Environmental Quality and is under orders to install a waste water control system.
