A 45-year-old Marshfield man pleaded not guilty on March 17 in Marathon County Court to animal mistreatment charges involving 25 head of cattle.

Patrick Varsho was charged Feb. 21 after a Marathon County Sheriff's Department investigation found the cattle with no food or water in a barn at M207 Day Ave. in the town of McMillan. Investigators noted in a criminal complaint there was no evidence of routine manure removal in the barn. Nine of the cows were moved to a different farm after the investigation and the rest were taken to Equity Livestock for sale. One of the cows had to be euthanized because of its condition.

Varsho is free on a $2,000 signature bond while the charges are pending.
