An unidentified Douglas County couple has been cited by the sheriff's department on suspicion of child neglect and ticketed on five counts of animal cruelty.

When authorities received a tip on animal abuse, they went to the couple's farm near 269th Street and Pawnee Road in the northwest part of the county.

The Nebraska Humane Society said workers seized 16 dogs, 25 cats and seven horses from the property.

Dogs were mostly tied up or chained with no food or water. Three dogs had access to water in a bucket that had algae in it.

Most of the cats were loose on the property and in the house. The home was filled with garbage and feces. One dead cat was found. The cats were in poor to fair condition.

The horse stalls were covered with urine and feces. One of the horses had an infected leg that was swollen to three times the normal size.
