Frank Peek, 47, and his wife Nancy Peek, 43, of Marietta, Georgetown County, SC, were charged with child neglect after they found them in a filthy van with seven children, seven dogs, four cats and four turtles. They also face 11 counts of ill treatment of animals.

The Peeks were arrested after deputies arrived at the parking lot of Pawleys Island First Baptist Church. They are both being held in lieu of $125,000 bond.

The Peek's children, ages 5 to 17, were placed in foster care with the Department of Social Services.

The van was loaded with clothing, boxes and a sock filled with thousands of dollars. The police think the couple went from state to state and received money from church donations.

Some of the animals, a poodle, hound dog and a Siamese cat were found shivering under piles of clothing in their own feces and urine. They might have to be euthanized because of their condition. Most had scabies and were malnourished.

Some of the cats tested positive for feline leukemia and will be euthanized.

The couple also had four turtles in a Rubbermaid plastic containr behind the driver's seat. "The shells were hard, the water was slimy and green, and the smell was horrible. Some of the shells were falling off."

The Humane Society is looking for caretakers for the animals.
