The driver of a four-wheeler found five dead dogs in a wooded area off Beavers Mill Road on the afternoon of March 14.

Danville Area Humane Society Executive Director Paulette Dean said the pit bull and shepherd mixes appear to be the latest victims of animal cruelty, which she said is on the rise in the Danville-Pittsylvania County area.

The dogs bodies have been sent to the state veterinarian lab in Lynchburg where necropsies will be performed. Because there were no obvious signs of injury to the bodies, Dean has asked that toxicology tests be performed on the animals.

The dogs were discovered early Tuesday afternoon, but Dean said she did not receive a call until around 4 p.m. Dean described finding the dogs as an eerie scene. She said they were all found on their sides facing the same direction, and that they were placed an equal distance from each other. She said the dogs had been dead about three or four days.

These dogs certainly deserved better, she said.

Dean and her staff are investigating the dogs deaths. She said she believes the animals lived near the area where they were found. Dean said she has identified the dogs possible owner.

I would like to talk with him, she said.

The male and female dogs were black and brown in color.

The discovery of the dogs came a day after Dean hosted a meeting to discuss increasing incidents of animal cruelty in the area.

Anyone with information about the dogs found on Beavers Mill Road is asked to call the Danville Area Humane Society at (434) 799-5306. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in the incident.

Case Updates

Necropsies performed on two of the dogs revealed that the animals suffered head injuries, and Danville Area Humane Society executive director Paulette Dean said yesterday she believes the dogs were poisoned.

She says that case is at a dead end because she's unable to prove who owned the dogs or find witnesses for a court proceeding.
