Charlotte County Animal Control is investigating how a Rottweiler wound up dead and tied to a tree. A boater passing by a home on Lindley Terrace on March 13 noticed the dog, which was apparently dead, tethered to a tree in the yard and contacted Animal Control. Animal control officers confirmed the dog was tied to a tree in the yard.
Lt. Brian Jones, the assistant director of Animal Control, said the case is under investigation for possible animal cruelty.
The male dog was about 9 years old.
Animal Control has received previous complaints about the owner, according to Jones. An Animal Control officer removed three dogs from the same house recently.
A county ordinance forbids tying dogs to trees without proper shelter and water, according to Animal Control officer Reannon Juergensen. If the violation is deemed a misdemeanor, a fine of up to $1,000 can be imposed.
For a felony-level charge to be filed, it must be determined that someone intended to inflict harm on an animal, Juergensen said.
Animal Control encounters at least 50 dogs a year tied to trees. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
