A Queens contractor was busted March 12, 2006 for starving his two greyhounds, who nearly died of malnourishment in December 2005, authorities said.

Fulvio Guggino, 45, was slapped with two counts of animal cruelty after being arrested at his Maspeth home, said ASCPA Special Agent Joe Pentangelo. Guggino didn't feed the 13-year-old hounds he kept at his 59th Place home - and ignored their swollen gums and too-long nails, authorities said. The ASPCA launched a probe in late December 2005 when Guggino gave the malnourished Daphne and Bones to the Animal Care & Control Center, saying he no longer wanted them, authorities said. Under the care of the New York-based animal rescue organization Grateful Greyhounds, the dogs have slowly gained weight and are doing better.

Because of the prolonged lack of nutrition, Bones will forever need medication for gastrointestinal damage, officials said. "It's a true betrayal to do this to an animal who looks to an owner for nutrition and care," Pentangelo said. "It was simply a matter of them not being fed." Guggino couldn't be reached for comment.
