A Sterling animal shelter is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the return of two stolen puppies. The 9-week-old female hound-shepherd mixes were stolen March 7, 2006 from the isolation wing of the Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling. "I personally walked by their pen last night at 6 p.m. and saw them sleeping on their beds," said shelter director Leigh Grady. The kennel staff noticed two of the three puppies from that pen were missing and the gate was opened from the outside. Grady said the puppies were spayed last night and are still in need of urgent care. "We are also extremely concerned that these puppies may have been stolen to be used as bait dogs for training fighting dogs or worse yet, sold to a research lab," said the shelter's director.
"Bottom line is that our shelter staff is devastated we all get very attached to these little fuzzballs and have a great stake in the care of them. These puppies were rescued from being euthanized down south only to come up to our shelter and face an uncertain situation," Grady adds. Anyone with information is asked to please contact the shelter by phone at 978-422-8585 or e-mail at [email protected] or call the Sterling Police Department at 978-422-7331.
Case UpdatesTwo puppies that were stolen from the animal shelter in Sterling were found March 8, 2006 in Hudson. Safe and sound. The 9-week-old lab-hound mix and her sister are a little tired, but their ordeal on the run is over. "They're a little dehydrated, they need to eat and they need lots of love," said Leigh Grady, who is the shelter's director. The siblings were stolen from the animal shelter in Sterling Tuesday night. Police now say by two teenagers who had looked the cage over earlier in the day, then came back after hours. The dogs had just been spayed and a third sister was left behind. But when the teens needed a place to stash them, police say they called on a friend in Hudson. When pictures of the dogs aired March 8, 2006, that friend's grandmother made the call to Hudson police. "Even better news: one of the dispatcher adopting one of the puppies," said Grady. "So, we're very thankful for that, as well." Police have not yet filed any charges, but the shelter's director says she wants the teens prosecuted.
The second recovered puppy will return to the shelter for a check-up and be put up for adoption again. And after this, it's likely the phone will be ringing off the hook. | Source: CBS4 News - March 8, 2006 Update posted on Mar 14, 2006 - 4:56PM |
