State police are investigating possible animal cruelty charges in Mansfield. Several dead animals were found on a farm and three horses had to be removed and hospitalized.
According to officials more than 20 horses were on the property, many of them pregnant; as well as a dozen sheep, four bulldogs and several pigs, all living in conditions that are being described as deplorable.
The State Humane Society was asked to assist local officials who are working with the owners, Donna Russell, and Kenneth Morgan to resolve the problems on the property.
The problems include diseased and malnourished animals and a lack of food water and shelter. As yet no criminal charges have been filed, but a number of animals have been removed.
"A veterinarian with the rescue society from the state of Connecticut has reviewed the animals and at this time no animal is in immediate danger," said Sgt. Sean Cox. "Any animal that was sick and required medical attention has been removed from the property."
Officials stress that the owners have been very cooperative and appear eager to resolve the problems as quickly as possible. Case UpdatesA Mansfield woman has been given a suspended prison sentence in a farm animal cruelty case.
