Sometime around Feb. 23, 2006, four pregnant cows were shot several times and left to die on a large ranch near Seligman, about 75 miles west of Flagstaff, the Arizona Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday. A hunter discovered the animals when he was scouting the area for predators. "This is very serious," said Katie Decker, a department spokeswoman. "The fact that someone will go out and do something like this is very frightening." Authorities don't believe it's related to a recent case at a ranch near Cave Creek dam where nine cows were shot. Whoever is responsible for killing the cows at Diamond A Ranch in Seligman could face multiple charges of animal cruelty, Decker said. Department investigators are searching for leads. Ranch workers said each cow was shot up to five times. The animals were Hereford and Angus breeds - high -quality beef. The cows were young - only 2 or 3 years old. Ranch owner Harvey Dietrich is offering $1000 for information in the case.

When treated as a Class 1 misdemeanor in Arizona, a conviction of animal cruelty carries a sentence of up to six months in prison and a fine of up to $2500. but if the charge is more severe - a Class 6 felony - the prison sentence can be up to one year with a fine of up to $150,000. Chip Dixon, one of the bosses at the ranch that spans nearly 1 million acres, said a similar incident occurred at the ranch two years ago in which two cows were killed. "That was a little ways down from where the (latest) ones were," Dixon said. No one understands why someone would do this he said. "We don't have any idea. I just can't see somebody going in there and doing something like that," he said.
