A 16-year-old Jane Avenue boy was charged Feb. 13 with delinquency by reason of cruelty to animals. The teen told police that he was feeding his dog outside his home when a stray dog approached. The stray followed the teen into his house, and snapped at the teen when he tried to push it out the door, the teen told police. The dog would not leave when the teen yelled at it, so the boy got a 20-gauge shotgun, loaded with small brass bird shot. When he returned with the shotgun, the dog was on the porch but the door was wide open. He told police that he shot the dog, striking it in several areas around its face with bird shot. He told officers he didn't know how else to get the dog out of the house. The dog was transported to a veterinary hospital by the Summit County Humane Society, where it later died.
