Exactly two months after a Duplin County man was dragged from his car, beaten and robbed, a fifth suspect has been taken into custody and charged in connection with the assault and armed robbery of the man. The suspect, who turned himself in late February, was also brought up on a charge of dog-fighting.

Derek Terrell Fennell, 29, of 1866 Tomahawk Hwy., Harrells, was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and dog-fighting. His secured bond was set at $32,000.

Warrants on the robbery and assault charges were taken out on Feb. 20. A warrant on the dog fighting charge was taken out last Friday, Feb. 24, upon a search conducted at Bland School Road in the Harrells area by Sampson County Sheriffs and Animal Control authorities.

According to Sheriffs Capt. Julian Carr, the dog fighting charge against Fennell stems from approximately eight to 10 pit bulls found by authorities, along with equipment in the form of a treadmill used to train the dogs.

The assault and robbery charges stem from the assault on Antonio Jackson of Duplin County, who reported that suspects assaulted him and stole money from him while he drove his truck on Big Piney Grove Road last Christmas Eve.

Four others have also been charged in connection with the armed robbery of Jackson. Those arrested last week were James Michael Cromartie Jr., 26, of 89 Pollard Lane, Harrells and his father, James Michael Cromartie Sr., 48, of 2302 Big Piney Grove Road, Clinton. They were each charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Edna Cromartie, 46, also of 2302 Big Piney Grove Road, Clinton, and Rhonda Marie Cohen, 31, of 2300 Big Piney Grove Road, Clinton, were each charged with aid and abet in armed robbery.
