A Bushnell woman accepted a plea agreement on March 1, 2006 on stolen-gun and animal-cruelty charges.
Melinda Collins, 26, pleaded guilty in McDonough County court to one felony count of possession of a stolen weapon and one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals. An additional stolen weapon count and one count of obstructing justice were dismissed.
Collins was sentenced to concurrent 180-day jail terms on each count. She will not have to serve jail time if she complies with terms of a 24-month probation.
She also was ordered to pay a $200 fine, court costs, $300 in public defender reimbursements and $550 in restitution.
Authorities say Collins was arrested in January 2005 for possessing two guns stolen from Henderson County. At least one was a .22-caliber rifle.
Police in Henderson County received a tip stolen guns were being hidden in a Bushnell home where Collins lived. She denied knowledge of the weapons, but police watching the house later saw her loading weapons into a vehicle.
She was charged with animal cruelty after the county's animal control officer found an emaciated dog belonging to Collins in 2004. She was told to get medical care for the dog. Officers seized the dog on the third visit to Collins' home.
Authorities said the dog had puppies, some of which had died. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
