A Sherman County man was arrested, and his horses were taken from his land by sheriff's deputies after a call from a concerned citizen. The animal abuse case is five miles north of Goodland off of highway 27.
The owner was arrested on the evening of Feb 28 and is facing at least 14 counts of animal cruelty. The Sherman County sheriff says the horses were left for a long period of time without feed or water.
One of the pens had feed, but it was covered in mold and dead horses were not removed from the pen. Four are dead, 10 are alive and were taken to an animal clinic.
The clinic's preliminary assessment says two of the surviving horses are in bad shape and may not make it.
