Dog neglected, matted resulting in amputation

The owner of a neglected dog with badly matted fur and a leg that needed to be amputated has pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge.
The Berkley woman brought Cody, an 11-year old cocker spaniel, to Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in Bloomfield Hills in early February. Practice manager Jim Thompson said the mats on the dog's right forearm were so severe that they had cut off the blood supply to the limb, forcing doctors to amputate. The dog also had 4-inch-long nails.
Berkley Public Safety Director Richard Eshman said the owner entered the guilty plea before Judge William Sauer in 45A District Court. She was fined $446. No other information was available about the case, and it was not possible to reach her for comment.
After seeing Cody, staff at the clinic called police. Emergency room doctor Elizabeth Konoski said the owner surrendered the dog to the clinic.
Cody has a new adoptive family waiting.
In the meantime, his care at the clinic is being funded by TEAR, or The Emergency Animal Relief, Foundation. Started in February, the foundation accepts donations and uses the money to care for strays, neglected animals and pets who belong to owners who can't afford medical treatment.
