A Tucson man accused of decapitating a Great Dane two years ago was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after he allegedly beat a different dog.

A neighbor reported seeing Yanik Staley, 29, hit Cooter on the head with a hoe several times about 6:30 a.m. yesterday in the back yard of his home, in the 1300 block of North Euclid Avenue, a police report stated.

He also allegedly picked up the small, white mixed boxer by the hair, threw the dog on the ground and punched it repeatedly in the head, the witness told police.

The dog escaped several times, only to be dragged back out and beaten again, the witness told police. The witness estimated this continued for up to 10 minutes.
The dog walked with a limp and shied from Staley when Tucson police checked on its welfare, police said.

Staley was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty in July 2000 when he was accused of shooting a neighbor's Great Dane and cutting its head off in a neighborhood dispute.

"I can't say this surprises me, considering the viciousness of the first attack," said Marsh Myer, director of education for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

Bail was set at $5,500 at Staley's initial court appearance, and he was released from jail.
