A Lyndon man has been charged with shooting and wounding his neighbors' two dogs. Jeffrey Keyworth, 43, pleaded not guilty to two animal cruelty charges on Feb 27.
Keyworth is accused of shooting his neighbor's black Labrador retriever and walker hound with a .22 caliber rifle after the dogs repeatedly came onto his land and bothered his three dogs, according to an affidavit filed in the case by state trooper Russell Finn.
The dogs' owner Jeremy Lawson, 27, called state police on Jan. 19 after the animals came home wounded.
Lawson said he spotted a trail of blood leading from his house to Keyworth's backyard, police said.
Finn met with Keyworth on Jan. 30. He first said he didn't know about the shooting and then admitted that he had wounded the dogs. He said he had fired shots into the dirt and was unaware that the bullets had struck the dogs.
He faces up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine on each charge if convicted.
