Multiple complaints led police to a Central Ohio home on February 27, 2006. What they found, investigators called stunning and revolting. Delaware police said the home on Williams Road was in the worst living conditions they've ever seen, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported.
Eighteen dogs -- most of them beagles -- were removed from the home. In the upstairs of the home was dog waste at least 6 inches deep, police said. The dead body of another dog was also found in the home, Bowersock reported. Officials said the woman who lived in the home, 38-year-old Patricia Gay, was charged with child endangering because her 14-year-old daughter lived with her. She was also charged with two counts of cruelty to an animal, failure to immunize, number of dogs limited and failure to obtain an annual registration.
"The guys who went in, these are guys who've handled some pretty serious investigations," said Capt. Bruce Bijanowski, of Delaware police. "They went in and it about made them sick. This was not a weekend gone wrong, not caring for the dogs. This was a long-term, chronic problem, and the house was absolutely filthy -- so much so that representatives from our building and code enforcement division in the city condemned it." The dogs were quarantined because doctors believe they may have the disease parvovirus. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
