Animal control was called to Pagel's residence at 3100 Klondike by a neighbor who was concerned that several of her dogs were running around loose in the front yard.  When Animal Control arrived, they found 10-12 dogs and 4-5 cats living in squallor.  Animal Control officer Donna Miskovic reported that there was urine and feces throughout the house.

According to Animal Control, Pagel was working with several animal rescue shelters, taking in and fostering dogs from multiple organizations.

Pagel was charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Because Pagel had a history of alcoholism and manic depression, in agreement with the Nolle Prosequi outcome, Pagel, Pagel's attorney, and Pagel's psychiatrist agreed that Pagel would keep only 2 dogs, cease any further "rescue" involvement and would seek help for her alcohol and emotional problems.
