An elderly man convicted of animal cruelty after eight distressed kittens and body parts from five others were found on Feb. 26, 2002, in his west Toronto home has died before he could be sentenced. Donald Ringler, 73, succumbed to illness in hospital during the weekend, his lawyer, Edward Kelly, said.
In November 2005, provincial court Justice William Bassel also convicted Ringler of wilfully failing to provide adequate care for his cats and threatening a Toronto Humane Society officer with bodily harm. Crown prosecutor Phillip Tsui stayed all the charges today, which was when Ringlers sentencing hearing was due to begin. Its kind of a sad and strange end to a sad and strange story, Tsui said outside court.
