A homeless man who police say tried to take a sheep from the Little Rock Zoo has been arrested. A security guard at the zoo called police Tuesday evening after spotting a man carrying a trash can with a sheep in it, according to a police report.

Grady Allen Carnahan, 32, told officers he was a doctor and the sheep was sick, the report said. He said he was taking the animal to a veterinary clinic. Carnahan fought with the officers as they tried to take him into custody, police said. He was arrested on a felony charge of violating an animal facility and on misdemeanor charges.

Case Updates

Arkansas State Hospital doctors say a homeless man who allegedly stole an 85-pound sheep from the Little Rock Zoo should be acquitted on mental-health grounds.

In a court report, doctors say Grady Allen Carnahan, 33, suffers from paranoid-type schizophrenia. Carnahan faces a felony charge and misdemeanors stemming from the February 2006 incident when security guards found him dragging a trash can with the sheep in it.

Police say Carnahan claimed the sheep belonged to his grandmother. At another point, Carnahan told officers the Southdown Babydoll sheep was his mother. The animal was not seriously injured in the incident.

Doctors say Carnahan has been committed to the State Hospital four times since 1995 and has been treated at four other mental hospitals. They say his condition has been compounded at times by drug abuse.

His next appearance in Pulaski County Circuit Court is scheduled for June.
