Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!
Around February 1, 2006, Ronnie Mekins said someone busted into the garage of his Portsmouth home. That's when the burglar came face to face with Tucker. Tucker is a 13-year-old black lab.
Ronnie said Tucker cornered the bad guy. That's when the man pulled out a knife. "That's where the knife went in," said Ronnie as he pointed to his dog's neck. The man not only plunged a knife into Tucker's neck, he also slashed his nose. Despite the injuries, Tucker still managed to run the guy off. "He was protecting his family," said Ronnie.
Ronnie rushed the dog to the Lynnhaven Animal Emergency Hospital in Virginia Beach. He didn't know if man's best friend would make it. "By the time we got him there he had collapsed and had gone into shock. It was like taking a wet noodle out of the back of the truck," he said. But Tucker is a survivor. His wounds are healing and he's got a spring to his step. And to Ronnie and his family he's a hero. The neighborhood is hailing him as top dog too. "He's received six or seven get well cards and cakes," said Ronnie. "He's loving life."
The burglar is still on the loose. If you have any information, call the Portsmouth Crimeline at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
