Before he buries his granddaughter's horse, Bill Inman says he'll "cut out the bullet" that killed it. Inman hopes that police can use the bullet as evidence and find out who shot the 12-year-old mare, Shadow. Inman, 83, a farmer in northwestern Williamson County, said he woke up Saturday around 2:30 a.m. and happened to see a dark-colored car drive past his house. Moments later he heard two gunshots. When daylight came, Inman found the spotted saddle horse lying dead in a pasture, about 30 yards from the road. "What hurts me more than anything else is knowing I've got people that will do that running up and down the road by my house," Inman said. "What kind of person would do that? It scares me."
Williamson County Sheriff Ricky Headley said the intentional killing of livestock is a rare occurrence in Williamson County, but it has happened before in the area. Headley said the horse-shooting case will be assigned to a detective today, and that the sheriff's office "will be very aggressive with it." Headley said a reward is likely to be offered to anyone who helps police catch the person who shot Shadow.
The horse was a present to his granddaughter, Jessica Tucker, on her 12th birthday. Inman said Tucker, now 19 and attending college at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, would come home virtually every weekend to ride Shadow, who was the mother of two colts. Inman moved Shadow's body away from the road, so passers-by wouldn't have to see her. He said he'll bury the horse once it warms up, but for now Shadow lies beside a line of trees on a sloping field. Inman keeps a white, plastic bag over the neck, where the bullet struck. He said he doesn't want the blood to wash away until police have time to examine the wound.
