Sampson County authorities have charged five men in connection with a raid at a cockfight last weekend. The chief officer for Sampson County Animal Control says a caller reported a cockfight in progress at one address. Animal control officers and investigators with the Sampson County Sheriff's Department found nothing at that spot. But chief officer Tim Bass recalled receiving a similar complaint at a nearby location about a year ago, and officers headed to the second address.
At the next address, officers found 15 to 20 people watching two cockfights in separate rings. The crowd scattered when officers arrived and freed the birds as they fled. Officers seized 24 roosters on Feb 12, then 59 more on on Feb 13 when the property was searched. One bird died as a result of the fighting.
