Dog shot
Waco, TX (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Feb 15, 2006
County: McLennan

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: William Mitchell

Incident reports say that William Mitchell shot and killed a Jack Russell Terrier. Mitchell said "My daughter got bit a year and a half ago, same dog, and she'll have those scars for the rest of her life." According to Bob Gillum, a witness, and Mitchell, the dog got out on February 15, 2006. Gillum found it trying to dig under his fence so he shot his pellet gun and scared it into Mitchell's yard. Mitchell says he heard the commotion, grabbed his shotgun and ran outside. "I ran down to the end of the street to let the neighbors know because I didn't want anyone getting bit," Mitchell said. In official reports neighbors agree that Mitchell came to warn them. The two men say they then ran down to the river to warn any fishermen who might have been around.

"In the process of coming back up the road from the river that's when the dog attacked us." "He was going to bite us no doubt about it, and I had no choice but to put the animal down," Mitchell said. When the dog's owner came home she noticed her pet was missing. The owner has a double fence and couldn't figure out how the dog could have escaped. The report also says Gillum and Mitchell had both been drinking, and that parts of their original statements to deputies did not line up. According to the Sheriff, it's up to a grand jury to decide if anyone was in the wrong.
