A 6-month old golden retriever puppy was left in a hot car at King and Tully Roads. Police broke into the car to rescue the puppy that had been left in the car for approximately 45 minutes.

The puppy was transported to the Humane Society, but after being examined the puppy had to be euthanized.

When the weather is this hot, pets need to be kept out of cars and indoors as much as possible. Owners need to make sure their animals have enough water and cool places to rest.

The case has been referred to the district attorney's office and they will decide whether to prosecute this case as a felony or misdemeanor. Persons convicted of felony animal cruelty face up to three years in prison.

Christine Arnold, executive director of the Humane Society, said the agency sees about five to 10 such deaths each year between May and October. She also believes that many of the incidents are not reported and that in many cases the owners simply dispose of their dead pets.

The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley is again reminding people not to leave their pets inside cars during hot weather even if it's just to "run into a store for a couple of minutes."
